Radiation therapy of cancer of paranasal sinuses: a report on 86 patients

86 patients who had been receiving radiation treatment since January 1969 until June 1986 at the "Istituto di Radiologia" of UCSC of Rome are here analyzed. 52 patients neoplasms of the antrum (staging AJC 4, T1, 8T2, 19 T3, 21 T4), 34 had of the ethmoidal area (University of Florida staging: 12 at stage, 5 2nd stage, 17 3rd stage); 5 patients showed lymphnodal involvement. 34 patients showed an eidermoid histotype, 24 adenocarcinomas, 7 cylindromas, 14 undifferentiated and 7 other. 34 patients were treated with radiotherapy alone, 41 patients with post-operative radiotherapy, 1 with pre-operative radiothearpy, 9 with polychemotherapeutic integration. Only the patients treated with radiotherapy alone and with surgery followed by radiotherapy have been evaluated. The illness had been out of control for 10 patients; it had relapsed in 18 of them, 6 have showed metastasis. The totall actuarial survival of 5 years had been 39%, for the antrum it had been of 43%, while, for the ethmoidal area, it had been 30%. The epidermoid histotype has a 5-year survival of 54%, adenocarcinoma of 39%, the cylindroma of 33%, the indifferential of 18%, the other ones of 29%. The group treated with radiotherapy alone has a survival of 25%; while the one subjected to surgery plus radiotherapy of 54% (p = 0.01). In this group we have had a strong presence of initial stages.
