A review is presented on the occurrence of other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients. STDs discussed include genital ulcer diseases (genital herpes, syphilis, chancroid, lymphogranuloma venereum and granuloma inguinale), human papillomavirus infection (anogenital warts and subclinical infections), molluscum contagiosum, human herpesvirus 8 infection, viral hepatitis and ectoparasitic infestations (scabies and pediculosis pubis). The epidemiology, clinical features, transmission and treatment of these diseases are also discussed. It is concluded that STDs may enhance both the acquisition and transmission of HIV.
