Fatal cases of paracetamol poisoning

During the period 1982-1984, medico-legal and chemico-legal investigations were undertaken concerning 19 persons in the medico-legal institutes in Denmark and where death was due wholly or partially to paracetamol poisoning. This figure must be considered to be an absolute minimum figure for the cases of paracetamol poisoning. Paracetamol has been available over-the-counter in Denmark since 1984 and the annual number of cases of lethal paracetamol poisoning has increased. It is important to be aware of the possibility of paracetamol poisoning and to be conversant with the treatment. Treatment must be instituted rapidly after intake of paracetamol if it is to be effective.
