Keeping of milking cows in open or cold pens in comparison with massive stables

Comparative data are given on milk yields and feed utilization of groups of cows maintained under loose housing or tie-up cowshed conditions during the yr 1953-54, 1954-55 and 1955-56. During the last-named year, 7 cows kept in a tie-up cowshed averaged 4597.6 kg (3.79% fat) as compared to 6 loose-housed cows which yielded 4101.6 kg (3.85% fat). The nutrient intake of the loose-housed cows was 5-10% greater than that of the cows in the tie-up sheds. The results for the earlier yr were similar.
