In progressive secondary hyperparathyroidism, surgical removal of glandular tissue is the only therapeutic method of correction of the calcium metabolism. During a period of five years, subtotal parathyroidectomy was performed on 13 patients with progressive secondary hyperparathyroidism in Odense hospital. No complications were observed during or after the operation. The calcium metabolism improved in all of the patients and none developed recurrence during the period of observation. Treatment with vitamin D3 preparations is recommended during the early stages of secondary hyperparathyroidism and early operation should the condition progress.
