Histochemical and immunohistochemical methods in the diagnosis of mesothelioma. Twenty-four mesotheliomas and eleven peripheral lung carcinomas were tested with anti-CEA and anti-EMA antibodies, either monoclonal or policlonal, using the ABC-method on sections of paraffin embedded material. Mesotheliomas showed evident staining for CEA in 4% of cases using monoclonal antibody, while positive reaction increased to 33% of cases with policlonal sera. The staining for EMA appeared in 83% of cases with monoclonal antibody and in 93% with policonal serum. Twenty -seven per cent of carcinomas stained with anti-CEA monoclonal antibody, while the positivity reached the 100% using anti-CEA policlonal sera. The presence of EMA was revealed in 100% of carcinomas with both the antibodies. The value of immunohistochemical methods in the diagnosis of mesothelioma is confirmed only in evaluating many markers (positve and negative), and in parallel with morphological and histochemical features.
