All 12 paretic cows were found post mortem to have bilateral damage to proximal, medial and caudal thigh muscle. Three cases had grey necrosis alone, separated from normal muscle by a 2 mm zone of hyperaemic fibrotic tissue. Nine cases had similar grey necrosis but also ruptured, brown, oedematous and haemorrhagic muscle forming a marginal zone 2 to 50 mm wide. There were a few eosinophils within the margins of the areas of necrosis alone, but in the 9 cases of rupture the brown necrotic zones contained masses of eosinophils, indicating a similar association to that seen in rupture of necrotic myocardium in human beings.
