Sex-dependent differences in the level of sickness absence implying in most territories a predominance of the sickness absence of women are largely unexplained. There are attempts of interpretation ranging from the double strain of women in profession and household up to social and psychic peculiarities. In continuation of an examination made by Schmincke and Kroh it is shown that after subtracting such diseases that can definitely occur only with one of the two sexes there are hardly any differences in the UW between the sexes in 1984. This indicates possibilities of biological explanations. Social and psychic interpretations, however, maintain their hypothetic justification when considering the diagnosis-specific differences remaining despite the compensation of the differences in the total values.
