Action of methoxybutropate in chronic bronchitis. Comparison with guacetisal

The efficacy of methoxybutropate in chronic bronchitis has been assessed and compared with guacetisal in a randomized controlled between patient comparison. Twenty patients (9 males, 11 females), mean age 62.9 years, with flare-ups of chronic bronchitis took part in the study. Each patients was given either methoxybutropate (300 mg 3 times daily) or guacetisal (500 mg 3 times daily) both as syrups, for four weeks. The two drugs proved about equally effective; however, methoxybutropate tended to act more readily. Cough, difficulty in bringing up sputum, and amount of sputum were the parameters that responded better to methoxybutropate. Side effects were mild and were rarely observed with both preparations.
