Opioid peptides and neurohormonal reactions in stress and adaptation

It was shown in experiments on albino rats that a 4-hour stress causes a considerable elevation in the .beta.-endorphin level and changes in the content of hormones in the blood characteristic of the "alarm phase". Preliminary adaptation of animals with short-term stresses or the administration of adaptogen of an vegetable origin leads to an increase in the amount of basic .beta.-endorphin in blood plasma, which prevents its subsequent rise in the stress and weakens the hormonal changes characteristic of stress. Preliminary enkephalin injections also prevent the development of hormonal shifts in stress modelling.
