Instrument checking of patients with permanent cardiac pacing

In cooperation with TESLA Valasske' Mezirici a special electronic system enabling rapid, accurate and safe assessment of the functional condition of an implanted pacemaker was designed under the name impulsokop OPX 604. Our own schema of follow-up examinations for patients with permanent heart stimulation has been worked out during the several years of impulsoscopic examination performed at our clinic. From 1977 till the end of 1984, 3115 impulsoscopic examinations were made in 196 patients. The assessment evaluated the impulse shape, width and amplitude recorded from the limb leads. At the same time, impulse frequency, or intervals between impulses were followed. Since pacemakers produced recently have the dependance of stimulation impulse frequency upon battery voltage defined, the technically most important method of checking is follow the stimulation impulse frequency. The assessment of impulse shape is important especially in case of electrode defects. Impulsoscopic examination allowed us to prolong the interval between pace-maker replacement and in this way to reduce the a patient's discomfort, to say nothing of saving money.
