Involvement of the parathyroids in the development of hypocalcemia after thyroid surgery

Serum calcium, phosphate, and PTH levels were monitored in 10 patients who underwent surgery (bilateral subtotal thyroidectomy) for multinodular non toxic goitre. All patients showed transient postoperative hypocalcemia. There was no difference between pre and postoperative serum PTH levels. The authors suggest that postoperative hypocalcemia is not caused by hypoparathyroidism.
