Chemical burns of the eye: management of a unique case

This paper reports the case of a 79-year-old aphakic male who presented on an emergency basis with a red, swollen right eye. Following examination, a preliminary diagnosis of chemical burn was made complicated by an intermittent bilateral lagophthalmos. The causative mechanisms, pathophysiology and treatment alternatives for chemical injuries of the eye are discussed.
