The high rates of both unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases among adolescents mandate appropriate preventive efforts by providers of adolescent health care. Hormonal contraceptives offer the most effective and acceptable method of pregnancy prevention. The efficacy, risks, and benefits of low-dose combined oral contraceptive pills, injectable or implantable progestins, hormone-containing intrauterine devices, and vaginal rings are discussed. The effects of hormonal contraception on the acquisition of sexually transmitted diseases are also addressed.
