Xerophthalmia in under-five children in West Bengal

Among 3905 children less than 5 years old in 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, India, there were XN, X1A, X1B, X2, X3A/B and XS stages of xerophthalmia in 4.05, 5.99, 3.12, 0.18, 0.05 and 0.18%, respectively. The blinding corneal malnutrition could be prevented by supplementing diets with vitamin A and by educating the people on the cheap and available foods rich in vitamin A, such as pulses, jute and green vegetables.
