This is a French translation of a book originally published in English in 1979 as a contribution to the Unesco programme of research in social sciences into the situation of women in East Africa. Since its publication, Zimbabwe has become independent. The new government has clearly expressed its will to promote the equality of all its citizens and, in particular, equality between men and women. It has already taken measures in this direction in encouraging their participation in national reconstruction. The book analyzes the economic and social structure of Zimbabwe before independence, and also provides an account of the situation of women in the colonial society and the role they played in the struggle for national liberation. It is divided into five chapters: (1) evolution of the economy of Zimbabwe; (2) consequences of the economic transformations on the living conditions of the Africans; (3) changes in the family structure; (4) the evolution of the role of the dowry system; (5) the place of women in the legal system.
