The class immunoglobulins versus the histological picture in cutaneous leishmaniasis

The histological picture, classified on the Ridley and Jopling scale for leprosy, and immunoglobulins were investigated in 24 patients with cutaneous leishmaniasis. The entire range of histopathological changes described for leprosy was present and, in addition, one patient had lesions with both the macrophage-intermediate picture and the tuberculoid-intermediate picture. Except for IgG, there was no significant correlation between histopathology and immunoglobulin levels. IgG was significantly elevated in patients who had lesions with macrophages containing Leishmania amastigotes.
