One hundred cases of typhoid fever were studied for hematological complications. Nearly 21% children had various bleeding manifestations, 3% of these had bleeding from multiple sites. Moderate to severe anemia was observed in 60% of children. Classical leukopenia was present in only 14% of children, while 17% had leukocytosis. Severe thrombocytopenia (platelet count below 20,000/mm3 was observed in 3%, while 18% had count below 100,000/mm3). Evidence of consumptive coagulopathy was recorded in 3% of cases both clinically and on laboratory results.
