Actinomycotic infection of a fibroid presenting in the puerperium

A case is reported in a pregnant 26-yr-old woman, who presented as a surgical emergency following the spontaneous rupture of a fibroid abscess on the 8th postnatal day. At emergency laparotomy 1 litre of free intra-peritoneal pus was recovered, from which Actinomyces israelii was cultured. Therapy with penicillin and extensive surgery was successful.
