In the spring of 1951, working on a grant from the American Philosophical Society, and with the support and encouragement of the authorities of the National Museum of Antiquities of Tehran, an University (of Pennsylvania) Museum expedition conducted excavations at two caves in a limestone cliff near Behshahr, Mazandraan, Iran, four miles from the Caspian shore.
