Between June 1985 and May 1987 thirty-five patients with hematologic malignancies received a T-cell-depleted bone marrow transplant preceded by hyperfractionated total body irradiation as conditioning. After presenting some radiobiological considerations about total body irradiation the authors give the results for 20 matched and 6 mis-matched patients with a median of 12 months follow-up. There was no graft versus host disease or interstitial pneumonitis in the matched cases and rejection was 10%. Disease-free survival at a median of 1 year is 65%. All mis-matched cases rejected the graft and received autologous grafts. After one year three of them are still alive and one is disease-free.
