Audit of ultrasound scanning: antenatal diagnosis of congenital abnormalities in Harare, Zimbabwe

There were 91 major congenital malformations out of 36,514 deliveries in the Greater Harare Ostetric Unit between June 1985 and May 1986 making an incidence of 2.94/1000 total births. Forty six (51%) of the abnormalities were detected by scanning 3073 patients. Of the 46 abnormalities detected, 22 (48%) were diagnosed by ultrasound scanning of 122 patients whose main indication for the investigation was to rule out a foetal abnormality. 24 (52%) of the abnormalities were detected during scanning of 2951 patients for reasons other than suspected foetal abnormality.
