Telling patients the diagnosis is cancer: a teaching module

Twenty first-year residents and senior medical students participated in a brief teaching module in which they told a simulated patient she had a cancer diagnosis. A feedback session with selected videotape review identified individuals' strengths and weaknesses. Most showed high levels of concern for the patient and honesty, although almost half gave excessive amounts of data and scientific explanations. The exercise was extremely well received by the physicians in training.
