Pancreatic abscess due to infected hydatid disease

A man, in Athens, Greece, presenting with epigastric pain, mild jaundice and high fever was shown (using CT) to have a pancreatic abscess associated with an infected hydatid cyst at the head of the pancreas. The cyst was evacuated and drained. An external pancreatic fistula formed as a result between the residual cavity and the main pancreatic duct. An infusion of somatostatin was begun; the fistula closed within 3 days. One year after surgery, the patient remains well. The treatment of this rare condition is discussed.
