Basal ganglia are able to exert a modulation on focal hippocampal epilepsy. Electrically-induced afterdischarges of the hippocampus were markedly reduced by caudate stimulation; on the contrary pallidal activation caused an enhancement of epileptiform activity. The effects of selective destruction of some structures among basal ganglia were studied in the present study. Following CN lesion hippocampal threshold to induce afterdischarges decreased and duration of afterdischarges increased. Furthermore after destruction of globus pallidus and medial septal nucleus threshold and duration of hippocampal afterdischarges showed no modification following caudate conditioning stimulation. The results are considered as an evidence of a tonic inhibitory effect of the caudate on the hippocampus and make it likely the existence of a functional strio-pallido-septal circuit.
