A prospective randomized investigation was undertaken to compare self-administered oral emptying of the intestine with the conventional rectal emptying of the intestine prior to elective colonic surgery. The effect of the procedure was assessed blindly during operation. In addition, patient acceptance and use of staff were registered. The oral method was found to be more effective and economical. No differences were found in the patients' acceptance of the two methods. The oral method is considered to be an alternative in preoperative colon preparation which can be recommended.
