Serum glycoprotein levels in 63 patients with central nervous system disease were determined by electrophoresis, and 38 cases of normal adults were tested as a control group. In these patients, there were 28 males, 35 females with ages ranging from 18-84 years. According to the clinical diagnosis, the patients were divided into four groups: (1) 18 cases of hypertensive arteriosclerotic cerebral hemorrhage; (2) 12 cases of subarachnoid hemorrhage resulting from congenital and arteriosclerotic aneurysm or vascular malformation; (3) 12 cases of arteriosclerotic corebral infarction; and (4) 18 cases of sporadic encephalitis. It was found that there were changes of serum glycoprotein in the groups of patients which mainly showed a decreased .alpha.-glycoprotein, occurrence of .gamma.-glycoprotein in some patients, and some changes in .beta.- and .gamma.-glycoprotein. The changes of patients with cerebral infarction were more obvious than those of patients of other groups. In 3 weeks after the onset of the diseases, the changes of serum glycoproteins restored obviously, with the restoration of unconsciousness, paralysis of limbs and speech. The authors are of the opinion that a further investigation is needed to find out whether the changes of serum glycoproteins are cuased by primary brain injury or by metabolic changes secondary to brain injury.
