Variability of the branches of the Arteria iliaca interna

1. The variability of the parietal and visceral branches of the a. iliaca interna and ramus pubicus was studied in 116 cadavers (60 male, 56 female) and 64 arteriograms of the pelvic blood vessels. 2. Type I, with both its subvariants, can be regarded as the anatomical norm of the parietal vessels. 3. No generally valid branching type was foound for the visceral branches. 4. A ramus pubicus occurred in only 31% of the dissection cases; in 25% it was very faint and in 43.5% it was not present at all. The arteriograms fully confirmed the anatomical findings. 5. The variability of the visceral and parietal branches of the a. iliaca interna and ramus pubicus was in no way correlated to sex. 6. It is impossible to establish a typing system for the branches of the a. iliaca interna for angiographic examination purposes because of their great variability. In such an examination we must reckon with an incidence of every type of ramification.
