The study indicates that food refusal in children with certain inborn errors of metabolism is amenable to a behavioural treatment approach, even when that symptom coexists with anorexia induced by neurochemical alterations. Combined with good metabolic control, behavioural treatment can improve feeding behaviour and aid in medical and behavioural management in children with urea cycle and organic acid disorders. The possible benefits of pharmacological treatment with serotonin receptor binding agents should be explored.
