A case of Bechterew's disease which commenced in childhood is presented. The clinical picture presents several traits which are characteristic for arthritis in childhood. Peripheral joint involvement is predominant and, radiologically, spinal involvement is most pronounced in the cervical region in contrast to the findings in adult Bechterew's disease. No ligamentous calcifications occur but apophyseal joints become achylosed with formation of block vertebrae. As in other forms of arthritis in childhood, frequent ophthalmological and odontological control examinations are recommended simultaneously with the rheumatological treatment.
