Fifty-one children with allergic rhinitis of variable origin (pollen, dermatophagoides, pets' hair) were divided into two homogeneous groups and treated with ketotifen at the daily dosage of 2 mg. In the first group of 30 patients (mean age: 9 years), treated for 28 days for evaluation of the effectiveness was done with the rhinomanometric method, while in the second group of 21 children (mean age: 7.4 years), treated for 90 days, subjective scores indicated by the patients (or their parents) and objective evaluations by the physicians were considered. In both groups ketotifen caused improvement of symptomatology and performance. Moreover in the second group, treated for a longer period, we noted a progressive effectiveness of the therapy. Another noteworthy point was reduced use of symptomatic medication if required in combination with ketotifen. Side effects were rare.
