Renal ectopia in a dog and a cat

Urinary incontinence in an 8-month-old female Lhasa Apso dog was caused by an ectopic right ureter draining into the right uterine horn. The right kidney also was ectopic, being located adjacent to the junction of the right uterine horn with the uterine body. The diagnosis was established by contrast radiographic studies and exploratory celiotomy. Surgical removal of the uterus and the attached right kidney and ureter eliminated the incontinence. At 3 years after surgery, the dog was continent, with renal function adequate to maintain homeostasis. Evaluation of three littermates by intravenous urography revealed no abnormalities. An ectopic right kidney was an incidental finding in a 10-year-old female cat. The kidney was surrounded by liver.
