Tolerance to cephalothin in strains of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from blood cultures

The three major mechanisms of resistance of Staphylococcus aureus to beta-lactam antibiotics are enzyme-mediated resistance, intrinsic resistance, and tolerance. Of the 67 strains of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from blood cultures of patients admitted to Chiang Mai University Hospital, 24 (36%) were found to be tolerant to cephalothin. Tolerance may be of clinical significance and therapy of infection with tolerant strains of Staphylococcus aureus may require an antibiotic to which they are sensitive, in addition to a beta-lactam antibiotic.
