Erythema nodosum is a syndrome with an often difficult etiologic diagnosis. We have prospectively studied 20 consecutive cases with a study protocol, and its results were compared with those from a retrospective group of 44 consecutive patients: there was a statistically significant increase in the number of cases where etiology was found in the former group. Drugs were the most common etiologic agents of the syndrome; in a quarter of patients there were two associated etiologic factors. We think that this protocol has substantial advantages in the etiologic diagnosis of erythema nodosum.
