Incidence of retardation among low birth weight infants in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplń County

The frequency of retardation of different types among neonates with low birth weight was studied using the classification system of Development and State of Nourishment of neonates elaborated by the authors. In 1980 of the 1343 neonates 752 (56%) were pre-mature, while 591 (44%) were born at term with low weight, 90.2% of the latter group were classified as neonates with low birth weight due to the retarded weight development. As to the true pre-mature babies 28.4% (214) were retarded in weight development, 20% (150) in length and 12.5% (95) both in weight and length development. The frequency of these retardation types exceeds the double of the national average. The authors emphasize that prevention of low birth weight should aim to prevent the true prematurity on the one hand, and to reveal the causes of intrauterine retardation and their adequate treatment, on the other.
