Chinese hamster ovary (CHO), Vero and HeLa cell assays were compared for the detection of heatlabile toxin in crude culture supernates of 1338 strains of Escherichia coli isolated from 255 patients with diarrhoea. CHO cells were the most sensitive and detected 203 enterotoxigenic Esch. coli strains in 81 patients. HeLa cells were the least sensitive and Vero cells were intermediate in which 151 strains from 74 patients were positive.
