The first AIDS patient in Malaysia was diagnosed in December 1986 and since then 1 case has been recorded in both 1987 and 1988. Eight subjects are known to be infected with HIV and 1 has ARC; all the infections are in men. Tests on 289 haemophiliacs have confirmed infection in 11 cases (3.8%); all are asymptomatic. [These appear to be in addition to the previously referred to infections.] Since 1986 blood donations have been screened at 24 centres, which also provide tests to persons at risk. In 1985 the Ministry of Health surveillance programmes were established, followed by an AIDS task force and an AIDS technical committee to monitor spread of HIV infection. Educational programmes for schools, provision of information to travellers and haemophiliacs and widened public debate on AIDS are part of Malaysia's emphasis on education to contain the spread of infection.Hilary Richardson.
