On the basis of a series of 181 breast reconstructions for 161 patients, the authors review the conditions for reconstruction after resection of benign, precancerous and cancerous lesions. Use of prostheses and pure or associated myocutaneous flaps is valid after mastectomy/dissections (73) or subcutaneous mastectomy (108). Complications are discussed, including the formation of periprosthetic capsules and the risk of progressive cancer. Results are only functional and have no effect on the prognosis. Reconstruction is now widely offered in rehabilitation protocols for operated breasts and can be seen as an alternative to conservative treatments.
