Four methods of determining smoking and its intensity were studied and compared in 5204 males aged 40-50 years. The most significant and informative was the method that allows determination of the total number of cigarettes which had been smoked during the whole life. The many-years study indicates a significant advantage of this method over other commonly used methods of study.
