Medicolegal study of false reports in cases of rape and other types of violence

Twenty cases of false reports of violence, including 14 cases of postulated rape and attempted rape, are presented. It is emphasized that the person making these false reports is frequently in an unhappy situation and requires medical assistance and other forms of help. The prosecuting authorities appear to have understanding of this as cases of this type are rarely sentenced. The characters of the cases described vary greatly but appear frequently to be motivated as appeals for help, fear of another person or revenge. Psychiatric and/or psychological assistance appears to be indicated frequently.
