Cancer seldom develops in primarily benign gastric ulcer. Between 1967-1982 the authors found in 5 cases (2,8%) ulcer-cancer of 179 patients who underwent operation because of chronic gastric ulcer. This rate represents 3,8% of the operations performed by the authors because of malignant tumour of the stomach. On the basis of the examinations the authors range gastric ulcer among the precancerous states of the stomach and consider necessary to eliminate it by operation if it fails to heal within about 3 months. Continuous gastroenterological control, regular endoscopic examination and performance of serial biopsies with patients who recovered from gastric ulcer is advised even after the state of scar formation.
