'Nurmi concept' and possible transmission of campylobacters to poultry

The possibility of transmission of Campylobacter jejuni in caecal cultures from infected donor birds to chicks to be immunized by the 'Nurmi concept' was investigated. Experimental cultures of caecal contents from a 60-week-old hen contained 1.9 x 104 colony forming units, but none was detected after inoculation in VL medium, or in four subsequent subcultures. It is concluded that the diluting effect of subculture, and the inability of the organism to grow in cultures of mixed anaerobes from caecal contents means that the method is unlikely to spread Campylobacter in poultry flocks if the material is cultured up to five times before use.
