Protective activity of tiopronin in relation to the acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis

Thiopronine has the capacity of reducing the number and the seriousness of chronic bronchitis re-acutizations. 50 patients suffering from obstructive chronic bronchopneumopathy were checked during the winter 1984/85 when they were not treated with any preventive therapy. During the winter 1985-86, the same patients were treated with thiopronine (600 mg one tablet daily) for an average period of 138 days. The clinical parameters which were taken into consideration (the number of re-acutizations, of specialistic visits, of hospitalizations, the average and total number of hospital days) demonstrate that the treatment with thiopronine (600 mg/day) reduced, in a remarkable and highly significant way, the number and duration of hospitalizations, and all the other parameters. The drug was very well tolerated as shown by haematological and haematochemical parameters.
