The ultrasonographic diagnosis of acute development of thrombosis of the portal vein is reported on in connection with the description of the course of disease of a febrile patient in severe state. Diverticulitis of the colon was assumed to be the cause of the illness. Ultrasonography provided significant assistance in making the diagnosis and follow-up the course of the disease. The patient recovered clinically and has been working during the last year free of symptoms and complaints. Control examinations are continued.
