The effects of serotonin on the central and peripheral nervous system are reviewed. Focus is also on catecholamines, which are believed to interact with serotonin in controlling eating patterns and appetite for specific macronutrients. Results suggest the existence of a direct interaction between serotonergic and noradrenergic systems in the hypothalamus, which are involved in the mediation of behavioral adjustments for maintaining basal metabolic equilibrium. It is believed that the ability of animals to regulate food intake, in relation to energy and nutrient needs, requires the involvement of a variety of neurotransmitters systems, including dopamine and neuropeptides as opiates and pancreatic polypeptides.
