Complications of spinal analgesia with a 25 G needle and mobilization on the same day

Spinal analgesia was administered using a 25 G needle to patients over 50 years undergoing transurethral surgery. No restrictions were imposed regarding postoperative mobilization. The patients were questioned on the day after the operation and one week later. Four cases of postspinal headaches occurred (95% confidence limits 1.1-9.9%). None of the patients displayed any symptoms by the fifth day. Only one case of postspinal headache developed as early as within 24 hours of the operation. We, therefore, find no grounds for maintaining the requirement for 24 hours rest in bed after administering spinal analgesia using a 25 G needle.
