When collagen fibres absorb and desorb moisture, a moisture sorption hysteresis occurs. The area of the moisture sorption hysteresis decreases after the removal of the non-collagenous components from the collagen fibres and increases after tanning the fibres. The cavity theory of hysteresis, which suggests that the neck of the cavity gets widened after the removal of the noncollagenous components and gets constricted after tanning, gives a satisfactory explanation for this phenomenon.
