The patients with cholelithiasis were studied for baseline levels of glucagon, vaso-active intestinal peptide, bombesin and somatostatin before and after cholecystectomy. Hydrochloric acid and secretine tolerance tests were performed as well. It was stated that glucagon, vaso-active peptide and bombesin stimulated the excretion of bile in health while somatostatin demonstrated its inhibitory effect. Cholelithiasis is associated with shifts in the hormonal regulation of bile production and excretion preserved even after cholecystectomy. Because of a similar character of pre- and post-operative kinetics of hormones a significant increase in post-operative choleresis levels could be secondary to the influence of local factors (infections, mechanical irritation, etc.), which modify cellular sensitivity to the effect of hormones.
