To investigate the uptake and the excretion of catecholamines by the kidney during hemorrhagic hypotension, eleven mongrel dogs were studied. Blood samples were taken from the aorta at the origin of the renal artery and from the renal vein under the following conditions. a) : C; control b) :H-1; immediately after hypotension of 50 mmHg c):H-2;45 min. after hypotension of 50 mmHg. Hypotension of 50 mmHg induced marked increases in arterial and venous catecholamines. Venous norepinephrine and dopamine were higher than arterial levels of norepinephrine and dopamine in C. showing secretion of these amines into circulation, but in H-1 and H-2, venous norepinephrine and dopamine levels were lower than arterial levels of norepinephrine and dopamine, showing extraction of these amines by the kidney. Venous epinephrine level was lower than arterial epinephrine level among C, H-1 and H-2, showing extraction of this amine by the kidney. The kidney extracts epinephrine in control period and during hypotension. It secretes both norepinephrine and dopamine into circulation in control period and during hypotension. Our results demonstrate that kidney plays an important role to maintain the homeostasis of circulatory catecholamines during hemorrhagic hypotension.
