Association projections of the neocortex in the cat. IV. Occipital lobe

In four adult cats the occurrence and localization of association fibers after lesions in visual areas were studied in the other areas of the neocortex with the use of the method of Nauta-Gygax. 1.sbd.Area VI (area 17): Numerous projections go to visual areas VI and VII, to the motor cortex, to the somatic sensory area S I, to the occipital parts of the parietal and limbic cortex. Less numerous projections were demonstrated in the prefrontal cortex, in the somatic sensory area S II and in the rostral parts of the limbic cortex. Isolated projections were seen in the rostral parts of acoustic areas A I and A II, in the vestibular and gustatory areas, in the premotor area and in the remaining areas of the limbic cortex. Entirely solitary projections were demonstrated in the central parts of both acoustic areas. No association projections were found in the occipital parts of the acoustic areas and in further large areas of the temporal cortex. 2.sbd.Visual area VII: Numerous projections were ascertained to be going to both visual areas, to the somatic sensory areas S I and S II, to the vestibular area, to the limbic cortex and the occipital parts of the parietal cortex. Isolated projections were demonstrated in both acoustic areas, in the premotor and prefrontal areas. They were missing altogether in the greater part of the temporal cortex, chiefly in the basal areas. 3.sbd.Laminar distribution of association fibers is limited mostly to the infragranular layers. 4.sbd.Mutual association interconnection of the different cortical projections areas is discussed. 5.sbd.The validity of Mettler's principle of cortical callosal association was found to be limited.
